I know you are busy, what with it being December and all, but we, The City College of New York, or CCNY for short, have a few requests.
As I frightfully look around at the seemingly ever present hate of this globe, I can’t help but try to find the root; the root of Charlottesville, the transgender military ban, sexual assault, gun violence, hate speech, and white supremacy. I aspire so innately to identify a cornerstone to this treacherous system of events we know, unfortunately, too well.
As a commuter school, the administration at The City College of New York is always searching for ways to get students involved. Lucky for them, there is a new club on the block.
On September 5th, President Donald Trump tweeted, “Congress, get ready to do your job – DACA!” He followed up, saying they had six months to do so. This, of course, led to a myriad of questions: What is he expecting Congress to do? What does this mean for individuals receiving DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)? Due to antiquated statutes, there is currently a law in place called the Goldwater Rule. This states that it is, according to the American Psychiatric Association, “unethical for psychiatrists to give a professional opinion about public figures they have not examined in person, and from whom they have not obtained consent to discuss their mental health in public statements.”

The ever-beloved greeting card companies strive relentlessly to present holidays as events surrounded by perfection and embedded in normalcy. Yet, we see consistently in our own lives and in the lives of those around us, that this nuclear family ideal of holidays ceases to exist day to day.
The City College of New York has invited none other than First Lady Melania Trump to speak at this year’s Spring Commencement ceremony! That’s right, you’ve heard it here first! In June, CCNY will have the pleasure of hearing (the third) Mrs. Trump speak to the graduating class of 2017. This past election season, the world observed how fond Melania truly is of Michelle.
Some historical moments demand an immediate response. These situations incite reactions in living rooms, classrooms, and courtrooms. When President Donald Trump’s recent executive order suspended entry of all refugees for 120 days and blocked entry from seven Muslim majority countries for 90 days, it also created an atmosphere of resistance across the nation, and the world.
